AMA bulletin concerning tolls

Good evening, Campers,
I am passing this on to let everyone know that the AMA has gotten wind of our tolling issues here in Washington and is concerned.  If tolling reform legislation makes it to a hearing this will definitely be of benefit to us.

Should Motorcycles Pay the Same Toll Rates as Cars on the 520 Bridge?

Public Meeting to Discuss 520 Bridge Tolls to be Held in January More Info
The Washington State Transportation Commission will hold a meeting on January 5th from 6:30 to 8:30 pm to determine the toll rate for vehicles crossing the 520 bridge. The draft proposal under consideration includes a variable rate structure based on both the time of day and day of the week.
However as currently written, motorcycles would be required to pay the same rates as passenger cars. This despite the fact they typically use less fuel, create less wear and tear on the infrastructure and actually help to reduce gridlock in urban settings. Motorcycles are a recognized part of the solution to gridlock in many urban areas. They should in fact be charged a discounted toll rate, similar to the method employed by the state ferry system, if not given an outright exemption.
The full draft proposal can be reviewed online at:
http://www.wstc.wa.gov/HighwayTolling/SR520Bridge.htm.

The Commission is expected to take action at the January meeting and needs to hear from local riders like you. The meeting will be held at the Sound Transit Board Room, Union Station, 401 S. Jackson St., Seattle, WA.

    Hello Larry.

I have been down this road for three years on the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. The Transportation Commission gets thier direction from the Tolling Commission headed up by Reema Griffith griffir@wstc.wa.gov , and they get input from citizens advisary groups that they set up. If the AMA needs help have them contact me. I along with letters from various riding groups are making a good impact on the Narrows Bridge advisory group. I have been told by Reema if they make a recomendation to reduce the tolls for motorcycles it will happen.
