Here’s the most recent news about SB 5141 (Traffic Signals). The House Rules Committee “pulled” it to the floor calendar this afternoon, which brings us one step closer to actually getting legislative relief for the motorcyclists of this state who get stuck at non-detecting traffic signals.
The next step will be a second reading of the bill with the possibility of adopting the committee amendment, which is most likely as the House Transportation Committee has always supported requiring a 90 second wait to allow the signal to cycle prior to a rider moving through. I have heard no push back from either House members or Senators, so there is no real reason to worry about the bill being stopped by the proposed amendment. It is a complementary amendment, designed to clarify the requirements, not a “poison pill” offering designed to kill the bill.
After the second reading then it will go for a vote on final passage and then to the Senate for concurrence.
Being a baseball fan, with all the superstitions that go with that, I’m not to call for a certain victory, but things are looking better than they have in over a decade.
Until next time,
Ride safely and legislate well,
